There's a mythology around melodies — that they arrive whole, that the great ones are gifts, that if you have to work at it the result will be mechanical and stiff. Lennon and McCartney woke up with them. Beethoven heard them in his head before touching a piano. The implication is that melody is either given to you or it isn't, and effort is evidence that it wasn't.
This is wrong, and the wrongness of it has probably cost more songs than any other belief in music. Memorable melodies have structure. They follow patterns so consistent you can study them, reverse-engineer them, and build toward them deliberately. The earworm isn't a mystery. It's an engineering problem. Once you understand why certain melodic shapes stick and others slide off, you can make intentional choices about every melody you write — including the one you're working on right now.
Inspiration is real. But structure is what makes inspiration last.
Why Melodies Get Stuck
The brain is a prediction engine. When you listen to a melody, your brain is constantly modeling what comes next based on what it's already heard. That prediction process — the anticipation, the confirmation, the surprise — is where all the pleasure of melody lives. A completely predictable melody is boring because there's nothing to anticipate. A completely unpredictable melody is exhausting because there's nothing to resolve. The sweet spot is a melody that sets up expectations and then manages them: confirming some, subverting others, but always moving toward resolution.
The mechanism of "stuck" is specifically this: repetition + variation. A melodic phrase repeats often enough that the brain learns it and begins to anticipate it. Then a variation — a subtle change in rhythm, a slightly different note, an unexpected leap — surprises the expectation. The brain craves resolution, which means it craves hearing the original phrase again, which means it starts generating the melody internally even when you're not listening. That internal generation is what "stuck" feels like. You're not hearing the song — you're hearing yourself predict it.
Great hooks are built on this principle. "Don't Stop Believin'" repeats the ascending piano motif obsessively before the vocal even enters. The "Bitter Sweet Symphony" string loop conditions the brain before the melody arrives. The repetition builds the expectation; the melody satisfies and subverts it. By the time you've heard it twice, your brain is already generating it on its own.
The Contour Principle
Every memorable melody has a shape. Not just a series of notes — a contour. A direction. A sense of where it's going and what happens when it gets there. When you diagram the pitch movement of almost any hook that's been stuck in your head, you'll find the same basic pattern: a rise, a peak, a fall. Or a subversion of that pattern — a rise that doesn't peak where you expect, a fall that catches itself, a peak that arrives later than the musical phrasing suggests it should.
The contour is what gives a melody its emotional arc within a phrase. A rising melody generates tension, urgency, longing. A falling melody generates resolution, acceptance, grief. A melody that rises, peaks, and falls in a single phrase gives the listener a complete emotional experience in a few seconds — which is why hooks built on that arc are so satisfying. The listener doesn't need the lyric to feel the emotional movement. The shape does the work before the words arrive.
A simple exercise: hum or sing your melody away from any instrument, then map it with your hand — finger going up as pitch goes up, down as it falls, horizontal when it holds. Can you feel a clear shape? Does it have a moment of peak, of climax, of arrival? If your hand never clearly rises to a peak and descends, the melody probably doesn't have the arc that makes something memorable. The shape should be apparent even to someone who doesn't know what notes you're using.
The Rhythm-First Method
Most songwriters approach melody the wrong way: they start with the pitch, trying to find the right notes over a chord progression. But most memorable melodies start as rhythmic patterns, not pitch patterns. The rhythm is the skeleton; the pitch is the skin. Get the skeleton right first.
Tap the rhythm of your hook on a table. Don't worry about notes. Worry about where the emphasis falls, where the space is, how long the phrases are, where they breathe. A good melodic rhythm has shape on its own — you can feel whether it's interesting or flat before you've assigned a single note to it. Short-short-long. Long pause, short-short-short. The syncopated accent on the off-beat that pulls against the rhythm underneath it. These are rhythmic events, and they're what people sing along to before they can remember the words.
"Work" by Rihanna is almost entirely rhythm — the melodic pitch is deliberately minimal, but the rhythmic pattern is hypnotic. "Shape of You" by Ed Sheeran — people sing the rhythm before the melody. "Roxanne" by The Police — the opening chord and the rhythm of the title word are inseparable. The pitch matters, but the rhythm is what travels. Tap your melody first. If it doesn't feel interesting as a rhythm, it's not going to feel interesting as a melody.

The One Unexpected Note
In almost every melody that gets genuinely stuck — that reaches outside the genre, that people who don't even like the genre still find themselves humming — there's a note that doesn't quite belong. A note that's slightly higher than the ear expects, or slightly lower, or approached from an unusual interval, or held longer than the phrase seems to call for. That note is the note people remember. That note is the hook inside the hook.
"Somewhere Over the Rainbow" — the opening interval, that leap of an octave on "some-where," is larger than the ear expects and it lands with a sense of yearning that the word alone couldn't produce. The melody is doing the emotional work before Dorothy opens her mouth. "Purple Rain" — the sustained notes in the chorus, the way Prince holds a vowel against the chord change — the unexpected duration of those notes creates the emotional pressure that makes the song unbearable in the best possible way.
When you're writing a melody and it's feeling flat or predictable, ask yourself: where is the unexpected note? Not random — not dissonant for its own sake — but the note that arrives slightly differently than the melodic logic of the phrase would predict, that resolves beautifully but gets there in a way that surprises. That's the note your listeners will be singing in the shower. Protect it. Build the rest of the melody around it.
Vowel Mapping
This is craft-level knowledge that separates competent melody writing from great melody writing: open vowels and closed vowels behave differently when you sing them, and the difference matters most at the moments of highest melodic intensity — the peak notes, the held notes, the money notes. Open vowels — "ah," "oh," "ay," "oo" — resonate fully when sustained. They open in the mouth and the body and they carry. Closed vowels — "ih" (as in "bit"), "eh" (as in "bet"), "uh" — close off the resonance. They're harder to sustain on high notes, they sound pinched or strained at full voice, and they weaken the melodic moment.
Listen to almost any pop or R&B chorus and you'll hear open vowels on the held notes. "Oh-oh-oh." "A-may-zing." "Don't stop be-lie-vin'." The lyric is often shaped around the vowel placement — the word that lands on the peak note is chosen partly because of what vowel it contains. This is not accidental. Experienced songwriters feel this instinctively; newer writers run into it as a problem (the melody feels amazing but something isn't sitting right on the high note) and don't know how to diagnose it.
When you're building your melody and assigning lyrics to it, map the high notes and held notes first and ask: what vowel sound lands there? If it's a closed vowel, either adjust the lyric or adjust the melodic line so the held note lands on an open syllable. The word "night" is trickier to sustain than "fire." "Love" is easier than "it." "Know" sits better than "think." These are not arbitrary preferences — they're acoustic physics, and using them intentionally is how you make a melody that sounds effortless.
The Repetition Paradox
Say the hook melody once: it vanishes. The listener has no reference, no expectation, no way to predict or remember it. Say it twice: it starts to register. Say it three times: it's sticky — the brain has modeled it enough to start generating it internally. Say it four times: still works, with a good arrangement variation to keep it from feeling static. Say it five times or more without any variation or development: it becomes annoying, the melodic equivalent of someone tapping on your shoulder repeatedly. The brain stops engaging because there's nothing new to anticipate.
The magic window is two to three repetitions of the core melodic hook, usually with some variation on the second or third — a slightly different rhythm, a note held longer, a different ending. The verse might introduce the melodic idea once. The pre-chorus might hint at it. The chorus delivers it twice with a slight variation on the second pass. That's enough for the brain to model it, anticipate it, crave it. Any more and you're not deepening the hook — you're grinding it down.
The Beatles understood this better than anyone. "Hey Jude" repeats the melodic hook at the end obsessively — but the arrangement, the energy, the choir, the Paul McCartney screaming changes everything. The melody is the same. The context keeps evolving. If you're going to repeat more than three times, you need something else in the arrangement to be moving. The melody can stay still if everything around it is in motion.
The Gap
The most underused melodic technique is space. Not rests for musical phrasing — deliberate gaps in the melody where the listener's brain anticipates what comes next and actually generates it internally. The gap is the silence between phrases where the melody is so well-established that the brain fills it in automatically. That internal generation is participation — the listener becomes a co-creator of the song, and that's why they feel like it belongs to them.
Call-and-response is built on this. "Layla" — the riff ends and the space that follows is full of anticipation. "Under Pressure" — the bass line leaves gaps the brain can't help but fill. The gap only works when the melody is established enough that the brain knows what to expect. You can't leave a gap in a melody the listener has heard once. But by the second chorus, by the bridge return, by the outro — if your melody is strong enough, the gaps become as musical as the notes.
Try this: record your melody, then go back and listen for moments where you could pull a note or a phrase out and let silence hold the space instead. Does the silence create anticipation? Does the phrase that follows feel like a resolution rather than just the next thing? If yes, the gap is working. The melody is doing what the greatest melodies do: making the listener complete it, which means making the listener feel it's theirs.
